In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times' Heo Complex blog, Michael Bay was asked essentially whether the third Transformers film (due out in the summer of 2011) will be as big and loud as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Bay provided a response not characteristic of his usual style, saying, "There will be a nice crescendo ending. ... It gets much more into the robot character. The last time you kind of met a few of the robots; this time you’re gonna get a much cooler landscape."
Of course, in the Bayverse, "much more into" any kind of character may mean we get explosions only in single-digit quantities. Either way, though, this is a slightly unexpected statement from a director who has demonstrated an overwhelming desire to make things huge, fast, fiery, and bullet-ridden.
It's very possible that Bay is just saying this to get critics to pay attention to the next installment in light of the unfavorable reviews garnered by Revenge of the Fallen, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I have no good reason to expect Transformers 3 to be any good, but, taking into consideration the quality of Bay's first Transformers, I do think it can be good. Albeit, part of my optimism is certainly due to a weakness for huge robots.
At the same time, historically speaking, film franchises have rarely been able to recover in quality following a weak second installment (I can't think of a single such instance). So, while I'll take Bay's word for what his intentions will be, and while I don't think it's unreasonable to hold out hope that the next big-screen appearance of our favorite transforming robots from outer space might be satisfying, I also don't think it's safe to expect much.
